about

"Alexandre Bellenger and Ignaz Schick had known about each other through the more or less loosely connected community of experimental turntablists. They were discussing a collaboration several times and exchanged information about their work for an online publication on the topic. But it was only in 2016 that they for the first time met in person which resulted in this recording and album. Schick in 2016 lived and worked in Paris for six months with a composition/sound art residency at the Cité des Arts and collaborated with a selected number of local artists. One of them was Bellenger who at that moment had almost withdrawn from the music scene. He invited Ignaz over to his house for a session and suggested the concept for "Counterparts" which can be summed up with the simple formula "1+1=11". In every track they both perform with only one turntable, they share one DJ-Mixer and limit themselves to one channel each and they only use one record per track. The 11 pieces which make up this album and which is the second half of the entire session were recorded in the order as they are presented here. As you can hear this was a joyful afternoon for both players. The music is crisp, raw & fresh, at the same time detailed/contrasting and full of playfulness. After this initial session Alexandre Bellenger & Ignaz Schick continued to collaborate and performed in different contexts as a duo or in different large ensemble situations in Paris and Berlin."
