about

"After years of intense traveling with his electro-acoustic turntable set-up Ignaz Schick in late 2012 took a longer sabbatical from his touring routine and only performed concerts within Berlin. He took the time off to bring back to attention some of his other and over the years disregarded talents: playing the saxophone, composition and visual arts. During that time he also started researching, meeting up and collaborating with musicians from other Berlin scenes and generations. One of the new groups which came out of this research was Salz, an entirely acoustic quartet comprising of Liz Allbee (trumpet), Ignaz Schick (alto saxophone), Mike Majkowski (double bass) and Oliver Steidle (drums, percussion). The two tracks on this album were recorded live during a two day stint at the Berlin venue Sowieso in early December 2016. What you hear is the complete and unedited first meeting. There were no prior rehearsals or pre-composed pieces. The music is the result of an instant and sensitive adhoc exchange among the four players. There is an astonishing melodic interplay between the two horn players, a crisp and at the same time subtle interaction within the rhythm section which allows the four musicians to quickly switch from post-harmolodic power play to carefully crafted chamber music based upon fine abstracted materials."
