about

Andrea Neumann and Ignaz Schick met in the early/mid 90ies in Berlin and started working as a duo around 1996/1997. In those days they both were part of a new generation of musicians who were looking for a new aesthetic and approach in improvised and experimental music and are now considered as „first generation“ of the Berlin Echtzeitmusik scene. Both artists were innovative in researching new sounds and forms using such materials as amplified object sounds, clicks, cuts, white noise, buzzes, pure (sine) waves or feedback. For the realization of this novel sonic footage both invented their own instruments, set-ups and developed unique extended performance/instrumental techniques. Andrea Neumann has built a custom designed inside piano frame which she is playing and treating with various gadgets while Schick over the years has developed his object on turntable setting which he calls Rotating Surfaces. Another parallel in their approach is the use of strong amplification which serves as a sonic magnifying glass to look/listen close-up & inside the used materials.
The duo performed quite a bit around Germany & Europe with an early CD on Zarek documenting their early work phase. The material of „Verschieben & Verschrägen“ was recorded in September 2008 during a re-union session at Schick’s studio space P4C. The sounds used are often raw, noisy and direct, the resulting music are crisp and sensitive collages of a "musique concrète instrumentale".
