about

"After school and a short stay in Berlin before completely moving there in 1995 Ignaz Schick lived in Munich from 1992-1995. He took a one year sabbatical working at the post office and while in his free time mostly watching art movies, listening to vinyls, practicing saxophone and composing music he in 1993 started searching for fellow experimentalists in a at the time rather conservative town in terms of music. Initially just looking for an acoustic working trio his digging quite soon payed off and he met numerous players who were interested in free improvisation and in experimenting. Not yet finding the perfect fit and with all options being exciting the search lead into what would become N.I.E. (New Improvisors Ensemble) which within a very short time grew into a pool of about 15 musicians who met, rehearsed and performed frequently in the Munich club and off scene. The group would perform in various constellations from trio to full orchestra (NIE3, NIE4, NIE5, ....) and became quite known for unusual events like improvising along experimental short films of art students or the legendary "Platzkonzerte" in 1994 (four weeks of unannounced performances in selected public spots all over the city of Munich). One classic and outstanding line-up was this incarnation of NIE3 consisting of Schick and a tight and experienced rhythm section with bassist Georg Janker and drummer Eric Z. Eriksson. The music of this album was recorded during NIE3X3, an event which presented three different trios in one evening at Feierwerk Munich in late September. NIE already disbanded in early/mid 1995 but had a long lasting effect with quite some collaborations, friendships, initiatives and long lasting groups coming out of this short but fruitful initiative."
